Google’s Helpful Content Update: What it Means for SEO

Updated: Oct 6, 2022

A new major update has begun to roll out at Google, which looks to change the way it classifies and ranks web content. According to Google, the Helpful Content update aims “To better reward content where visitors feel they've had a satisfying experience, while content that doesn't meet a visitor's expectations won't perform as well.” This means that uninformative content that has been written solely for the purpose of driving traffic and ranking highly in search engines will no longer be considered by Google.

Luckily, here at CCM, our SEO strategy is based around creating content that is meaningful and helpful for users. Our team of expert content writers can create an SEO plan for your business, that will enable your website to rank highly on Google as the helpful content update comes into place.

What is Helpful Content?

To assist SEO strategists and content writers, Google have released a list of criteria that content should meet, in order to be classed as ‘helpful’ and be ranked highly by its algorithms:

· Content should provide relevant answers to searchers’ questions, and resolve their concerns.

· It should be factual and show a depth of knowledge about a particular service or product, with helpful insights for readers.

· Websites should have a primary focus and remain in their area of expertise, rather than unnecessarily diversifying for the sake of traffic.

With all of this in mind, Google have said that the update should "help make sure that unoriginal, low-quality content doesn't rank highly in Search,” and should reward content that is created with searchers in mind.

When Will This Happen and How Will it Affect SEO?

Although the helpful content update began to roll out on August 25th, Google have said that it may take up to two weeks before any major changes are seen. It’s likely that once the update is fully rolled out, it will change the way that SEO is performed - in the same way that the previous Panda and Penguin updates did in 2011 and 2012.
