Instagram Moves to Full Screen

The incredible growth of TikTok during the past couple of years has certainly not gone unnoticed in the world of social media platforms. To keep up to speed, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, has announced a major update to the Instagram app, which appears to take a huge leaf out of TikTok’s book. Instead of the stories bar at the top of the screen, users will now see content in full screen, with a swipeable flow of videos, static images and its increasingly popular Reels feed. At CCM, we are always ahead of the latest trends in social media, outlining here what this change may mean for marketing on the platform.

Changing Digital Marketing Habits

Audiences on social media are continually changing their habits, with short-form video watching now one of the most popular ways to spend time on apps. Meta itself announced earlier this year that 20% of all time spent on Instagram by it’s users was spent in its Reels feed. As more users are turning to browsing content like this, brands that are marketing on social media are having to change habits, particularly when targeting younger demographics. Now that Instagram has announced this huge change, we can expect that app users’ habits will adapt, leading to businesses changing their social media strategies to suit.

Will Other Social Media Platforms Follow?

With the ongoing influence of TikTok, it is expected that other social media platforms decide to go down this road too. Facebook, one of Meta’s other big brands has started to adapt too, with it’s Watch feed of short-form videos. A recent report suggested that the platform are looking to lean even more towards this, to try and keep audiences engaged. With over 2.87 billion daily users of the Meta family of apps – Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp – it is sure to have a huge impact on consumers and audiences around the world.
